There are many reasons to develop a second language including your employ-ability and income level. Current statistics are hard to find but one study estimated having two languages rather than one can increase your income as much as 10 %. Another study of by the National Endowment for the Arts cited these benefits:

·                     benefits academic progress in other subjects

·                     narrows achievement gaps 3

·                     benefits basic skills development 3

·                     benefits higher order, abstract and creative thinking

·                     enriches and enhances cognitive development

·                     enhances a student’s sense of achievement

·                     helps students score higher on standardized tests 5

·                     promotes cultural awareness and competency

·                     improves chances of college acceptance, achievement and attainment

·                     enhances career opportunities

·                     benefits understanding and security in community and society

I really admire others who have studied and mastered a language and have recently taken on a goal to become proficient at Spanish by the time I am 60 which is eight years from now. I am beginning the journey by using a new and very innovative online program called duolingo.com where you can now learn German or Spanish for free with many more languages coming soon.  Check it out–
